With a number of new players in the squad this Amersham Town team had an unfamiliar look. It was not, however, the easiest introduction to Spratley’s Meadow as the pouring rain made the pitch sticky and the ball difficult to control. Town, however, stuck to their task and were a little unlucky not to get something out of the game.

As is usual, Amersham Town conceded a goal early in the match. There was little that the defence could do after five minutes when  Bedford’s Alex Taylor collected the ball just outside the penalty area and lashed a fierce drive past Perry Cheadle in the Town goal.

Bedford continued to be the brighter team and Amersham defender Aaron Morten had to be alert on seventeen minutes to clear a dangerous through ball. One minute later, however, Bedford went further ahead. Ian Thorne beat two Amersham players in a powerful run down the left and then picked out Jack Weeden who had the simplest of tap ins.

Amersham came out for the second half, in driving rain, with far more purpose. On sixty minutes Karol Derewenko deflected a corner just past the post, only for Bedford to advance to the other end where a goalmouth scramble finished with Weeden taking the ball past Cheadle but hitting the side netting. Six minutes later Derewenko was played through but Bedford keeper Wayne Simpson was out quickly to smother the ball.

Amersham, however, pulled a goal back on seventy four minutes. From a free kick on the right Derewenko flicked the ball on and substitute Ryan Forbes showed excellent technique to volley the ball home.

Amersham continued to press for an equaliser without ever succeeding in carving out a clear opportunity. The match finished in bright sunshine as the referee blew the final whistle.
